The love that split the world by Emily Henry

The Love That Split the World

Natalie Cleary’s last summer in Kentucky feels magical—until she starts seeing things that shouldn’t be there. First, it’s small changes. Then, her whole town vanishes.

A mysterious apparition called Grandmother warns her: “You have three months to save him.” The next night, she meets Beau, a boy who feels like fate. As time unravels around them, Natalie must risk everything for love—or lose him forever.

Emily Henry’s stunning debut blends Friday Night Lights with The Time Traveler’s Wife, capturing the magic and heartbreak of a summer that changes everything.

Review

I have to be honest, from the title, I didn’t expect much of this book. I was wrong, and I love it when I’m wrong in moments like this. This was a wonderfully-written, introspective book of surprising depth. This book has diversity (for example, the main character is dark-skinned Native American) and feminism, two traits that are incredibly rare in YA literature. I think it would fit into the magical realism genre, which is surprising, since I tend to think of that entire genre as hippie-dippie bullshit.
